Ceramic Art, Emily Carr, Paintings, Ceramic Sculpture

A Tribute to Emily Carr, Painter and Canadian Icon

Emily Carr was born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1871, the year British Columbia joined Canada. She was the youngest of nine children. The Carr home was on Birdcage Walk, (now Government Street) in the James Bay district of Victoria, a short distance from the legislative buildings (nicknamed the 'Birdcages') and the town itself. The house still stands and is a museum in her honour. Her father encouraged Emily's artistic inclinations, but it was only in 1891, after her parents' deaths that Carr pursued her art seriously.

In 1898 Carr made the first of several sketching and painting trips to Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island, home to the Nuu-chah-nulth people...Read more about Emily Carr's life and times at Wikipedia.

I have always admired Emily Carr; her courage, her talent, her determination and her spirituality.  My last two years have been spent studying her life and trying to depict something of her life in my sculptures and paintings.

I have purposely depicted her in the same simplistic way (hairnet and plain dress) to create a recognisable icon.  The shadow boxes were a way to meld my love of sculpture with a stylization of her paintings..
